Organisms

There are two different types of organisms: heterotrophs and autotrophs.  Heterotrophs are organisms that obtain their food through the consumption of another living organism.  Autotrophs are organisms that make their own food.  There are different types of autotrophs as well. These include photoautotrophs and chemoautotrophs. Photoautotrophs create their own food by means of photosynthesis. Chemoautotrophs use chemicals to create food. The two lists below show some examples of photosynthetic organisms and organisms that use cellular respiration.

Photosynthetic Organisms (Photoautotrophs)

  • Camellia (Plant)
  • Mazzaella splendens (Algae)
  • Cyanobacteria (Bacteria)
  • Phytoplankton (Plankton)
  • Polyneura latissima (Algae)

Different Organisms using Cellular Respiration (Heterotrophs)

  • American Foxhound (Dog)
  • Persian Longhair (Cat)
  • Marble Angel (Fish)
  • Malayan Tiger (Tiger)
  • Sulphur Cockatoo (Bird)
